Introduction - Read this first!

Creating your own custom template seems complicated, but it's not. If you know a little bit about HTML and CSS we are sure you will succeed. Follow the steps of the left menu and create and activate your own template in 5 easy steps.

For whom is this template tutorial meant

This tutorial is meant for non-professional webdesigners, who want to have their own webdesign.

You want to have a website with its own look and feel, but don't want to download a (mostly complex) template from the internet. With 5 easy steps you can create a simple but professional design for your Joomla website. You could easily create the template of this website, Joomla CSS, with these 5 steps.

What do you need?

You only need your default Notepad (default code editor software in Windows) or simular software. You don't need expensive software for designing a website, no html editor, no local server installation. What you do need is a host, where you install your test version of Joomla and a FTP client to upload your files. When you already have an active website and don't want to go offline for a while just ask your host for a (extra) database and install your test version in a sub-directory of your site. Behind the scenes you can work on your Joomla website without going off line. This tutorial will not provide you information on how to install a Joomla website (in a sub-directory). You have to search the documentation of Joomla for it.

How do you create or get images for your website design?

The internet is full of images and design stuff. But if you can't find what you're looking for, you have to create your own. You can use software like Photoshop or the free Photoshop clone version Gimp.

5 Steps

In 5 steps you can create and activate your template.

  1. Design your template layout in HTML.
  2. Download the "Blanc Template file" file for Joomla 1.5 or Joomla 1.6-1.7.
  3. Adjust the content of the blank Template files with your Notepad to implement your own layout.
  4. Install the adjusted files on your server.
  5. Fill your website with content and additional CSS in your template.css file through the backend adinistrator of your website.

We discuss every step in detail on the following pages.
