Step 4: Install the template files on your server
Your template files are now ready to install. You can upload the files with your FTP client software to the templates folder of Joomla or create a zip file to install the tempate in the backend extension manager.
Upload files
When you upload the files directly to your template folder in Joomla, the template of Joomla 1.5 will activate immediatly. In Joomla 1.6/1.7 the template also needs to be installed in the database. You can do that without using a zip file.
Install the template in Joomla 1.5
Log in to the backend of your joomla 1.5 website and go to Extensions and choose Templatemanager.

In the list there is your new template. In the example template it is templatetutorial_1.5.

Activate this template as the default template, using the top right menu.

The template is now active as the default template.
Joomla 1.6 / 1.7
Log in to the backend of your website and go to Extensions and choose Template Manager.

The template is not in the list.

In Joomla 1.6 the template must be installed in the database. Go to Extensions and choose Extension Manager.
Choose Discover from the menu.

When you see no list where the template should be, choose Discover again, but now from the menu at the top right of your screen.

When everything went well now you see the list where your template name is visible.
Click on the template in the list and choose install in the top right menu.

Go back to Extensions -> Template Manager and set your template as default..

The template is now installed as your default frontsite template.
If you want an easier way just zip the template files on your local system and install with the Extension Manager.
After intallation the website looks like the following or if you installed your own template you must see the design of your template.

You have not yet set the module positions of your template so no modules are visible. You have to go to Extensions -> Module Manager and assign the modules to the positons of your template.
