Step 5: Fill your website with content and additional CSS

So far you have installed and activated your template without any content, so you have to put in the content and the modules. When you put in your content and modules you need to update your css or index.php code. You can do that using the backend adinistrator.

Changing the index.php and template.css in the backend administrator

Joomla 1.5

  • Log in to the backend and go to Extensions -> Template Manager.
  • Click on the template in the list you want to change.
  • Choose from the right top of your screen Edit HTML (edit your index.php> or,
  • Edit CSS (edit your template.css).

Joomla 1.6 / 1.7

  • Log in to the backend and go to Extensions -> Template Manager. (default you are in  Styles).
  • Click on the menu "Templates" and choose your the template in the list. There is no template image yet of your new template.
  • Click on detaills.
  • To the left you see the link to the edit screen of your index.php file (Master Template files) and
  • to the right the link to the template.css file (Style sheets).

Create your template image

When you have added content and modules to your website you can make a screenprint of your homepage for using in the Template Manager. Most likely you have to cut, resize and save this screenprint to be of use for Joomla. For this you need software like Photoshop or simular.

The "template_thumbnail.png" has a size of 206 x 150 pixels.

The "template_preview.png" has a normla size about 640 x 400 pixels.

The preview template image can have other sizes. It is not so strict. Keep the image as small as possible (640 width) is big enough.

You have to upload both images to the root folder of your template.
